Frequently Asked Questions - for acrylic aquariums

What is the difference between a System 2 and regular aquarium ?
The System 2 is our Internal Filtration system located entirely in back of the tank. A regular aquarium is a bare tank, that needs to have a filter added. This can be achieved using a canister filter, hang-on filter, or a wet/dry filtration system, where the filtration occurs in an external sump, with pumps, usually located in the aquarium stand.

What is a Show aquarium?
A Show Aquarium is manufactured only with filter slots for hang-on or canister filters and is sold without any life support system.

What is a Protein Skimmer and why should I consider buying one?
A Protein skimmer is a pump/aerator device used to remove proteins and organic material from salt water. This is essential in controlling algae and to reduce excessive organic waste, particularly in a coral reef aquarium.


Do your Canopy(s) come complete with lights?
No, lighting is always sold as an option unless otherwise included in a packaged promotion.

What kind of filters do you offer?
We offer a variety of internal and external (wet/dry) filtration systems, depending upon the individual tank requirements including canister filters, hang-on filters, protein skimmers for saltwater. Custom life support systems can be engineered for large aquariums.

What is a pre-filter and why do I need one?
A prefilter (also called an overflow) is an internal box (strategically placed inside the aquarium) that skims water from the surface of the tank to initiate the filtration process. It is used if you are setting up a wet/dry filtration system on your aquarium. This device also minimizes the drainage from the aquarium preventing water damage in the event of a power failure.

Does TropicalFishStore.com ever sell 'Used' Aquariums?

Does TropicalFishStore.com have a brochure or price list that they can send me?

Does TropicalFishStore.com have any Acrylic Aquariums in stock? And if so, how soon can I get one here?
Every Acrylic Aquarium (standard and custom) is 'Built-to-Order' and usually take 2 to 4 weeks to manufacture.


Why are acrylic aquariums so much more costly than glass ones?
Acrylic aquariums (on average) can cost more than glass primarily in the smaller sizes only. However Acrylic tanks easily justify increased value due to their clarity, strength, reduced-weight and ability to be fabricated into many configurations.

Can I purchase my Aquarium without an acrylic top?

All Acrylic aquariums require a minimum perimeter brace to support the side walls. We encourage you to call our Sales Engineers for specific details on our various systems.

How often does the water need to be changed?
Water changes specifically depend on each systems organic load. However on average a change every two months is recommended for replacing 10 to 20% volume of the aquarium water.

What are your standard recommendations for a lighting system?
We recommend on average 1 to 4 watts per gallon, depending upon your individual environment and specific livestock requirements.

Do I need to add additional filtration to either of your life-support systems in order to keep my water really clean?

All Acrylic filtration systems are engineered to maintain a healthy environment as long as the recommended fish loading is maintained. However, most systems have the flexibility to add additional components if you wish.

Am I required to purchase one of your stands or can I place my aquarium on a different base?

You can use your own stand if it supports the aquarium through the entire bottom and is structurally adequate to support the weight of the aquarium when filled with water.

Can I order a stand/canopy in a different color scheme than the ones offered on your web site?

Yes. We do offer the option of custom colors at a slight up-charge.

Does TropicalFishStore.com actually come to my home/office and install the aquarium?
TropicalFishStore.com currently does not install aquariums, however we will recommend a local service dealer in your area.
